Erna von Gaderthurn, a poor noblewoman, finds the love of her life in her fellow teacher Eugenio Casagrande, which brings her into the town conflict revolving around the avalanche barriers on the slopes of the Mont Calv. The story is based on the worst avalanche catastrophe that ever took place in the Alps.
